National Poetry Month

In the U.S. and Canada, April is National Poetry Month. It's a good time to read some poetry (check the front page of this blog for some electronic journals you can explore), to recall poems that you may have liked (or even memorized) years ago, or to write some poetry. If you live in a big community, there will be National Poetry Month events that you can attend. You can also check the poetry boxes in your community, or attend an open mic reading.

There are many poetry prompts that you can use for writing your own verse. A good venue for prompts is Poetry Super Highway.

If you are a poet, you might try stretching your skills. If you write free verse, try writing some formal verse (or the other way around). If you've always wanted to submit your poetry to a journal but have hesitated, now is a good time to make your first submission.

Give a book of poems as a gift. Read some poetry to your children and hear what they have to say about it.

April 27 is Poem in Your Pocket Day. Here some ways to observe it.

 Enjoy National Poetry Month!
